SDU Students Hold Cultural Day, Showcase Nigerian Unique Cultures.

In a bid to teach students and make them understand the cultural diversity of the country, the Southern Delta University, Ozoro, last Thursday held her maiden cultural day, showcased varieties of cultural displays.
The event themed: “Unity in Cultural Diversity” which took place at the School’s Convocation ground was organized by the Student Union Government led by Comr. Akpokona Caleb Oghenetega .
Speaking to the press, the Secretary of the Students Union Government, Comr.  Ilaya Prince Eloghene said, it was a wonderful opportunity for the student body to celebrate and showcase their heritage, traditions and values.

“It brought all students together in unity and pride, reminding us all of our roots even as we study near and far from home.”

He went further to say that the cultural day was “a chance to learn more about different cultures, strengthen sense of identity and build connections with fellow students from other tribes and leaders who care about our cultural heritage.”

According to the Financial Secretary of the National Union of Izon-Ibe Students (NUIS), Comr. Intelligence Ebilade , the cultural day was to create an awareness and remind us of our traditions.

“As Ijaw people, we have some slogans like ‘Asawane’ ; wrestling, dancing and masquerades. All these are our culture and this cultural day is for us to display this culture that we are known for.”

However, Comr Intelligence said the Student Union Government body was supposed to be on ground during the event as a group.

“They were not organized in the sense that they did not come in group as a Student Union Government and identify with all the tribes.” adding that the Student Union Government are advised do better in future by identifying with the various tribes in the institution.

Dignitaries present were the President- General of Ozoro Kingdom, Odio Beckley Asiafa, Comr Akudo Orobosa ,Isoko Coalition Forum (IFC), tribal leaders, Opiri Cultural Dancers, students and invited guests among others.
