…cries out for help

By Kelvin Ohoror
A middle aged man, Mr. Silas Akporobaro, aged 48 from Okpe-Isoko in Isoko North Local Government Area, Delta State, has made a passionate appeal for financial assistance as he battles the devastating effects of glaucoma, a condition that is causing him to gradually lose his sight.

He made this appeal during an exclusive interview with this reporter when he shared his painful experience, explaining that his vision problems began in 2013. According to him, over the years, he has sought treatment from various eye specialists, but the situation has only worsened.

“Since 2013, I have been dealing with this vision problem. After several tests, I was diagnosed with glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide. At the time, no one advised me to undergo surgery, and I was only given medication. “Unfortunately, as I kept taking the drugs, my condition deteriorated,” Silas explained.

Narrating his ordeal further, he stated that despite the treatments, his sight continued to decline, forcing him to sell off all his properties in a desperate attempt to fund medical bills. “Two years ago, I lost my job, and since then, surviving has been a daily struggle. I have no money left for medication,” he lamented.

Recent medical tests at Lily Hospital in Warri revealed that Silas’s condition has progressed to a critical stage. “Doctors told me there’s nothing more they can do, and that I will have to live with it for the rest of my life,” he said.

He however, stated that there may still be hope, that he has discovered an alternative organic treatment that could potentially reverse the damage.

“The drugs are very expensive—₦150,000 per month for 9 to 12 months. With consistent treatment, there is a chance my sight could be restored,” he explained, appealing to the public for help.

Silas is not only battling his health crisis but also severe financial difficulties. He noted that has been unable to pay his rent for two years, and eviction looms.

“I am owing my landlord ₦180,000 in yearly rent, and soon I will be thrown out. I am begging for financial support to cover my treatment and secure a stable place to live,” he added.

Despite the dire circumstances, Silas remains hopeful. “It is been hell, but by God’s grace, I am still alive. Without income, I have been relying on the kindness of friends and strangers to survive. But now, I urgently need help to fund my treatment and reverse this condition.”

Silas is reaching out to well-meaning individuals, organisations, and philanthropists for assistance. Any financial support can help him cover the cost of the organic drugs necessary to restore his vision and give him a fighting chance at a better life.

John Oniyeburutan (right) and Engr. Ejovi Adasen (second right) during inspection of Beneku bridge and access road on Sunday.

Delta State Government, says the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration was responsive to citizens’ complaints in line with his zero tolerance for shoddy projects’ delivery.

The State Commissioner for Works ( Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze disclosed this on Sunday, during an unscheduled inspection of Beneku bridge and access road in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.

Izeze who stated that he paid an unscheduled visit to the project site in reaction to a complain on Social Media, said the Oborevwori administration takes seriously genuine concerns raised by citizens in line with the Governor’s posture for quality projects delivery.

Accompanied by Functioning Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Juliet Aboloje and top officials, Izeze said the contractor would be made to correct all abnormalities observed before any further certificates would be issued to the company.

“Let me first thank a very concerned citizen who performed his civic responsibility by using a veritable tool of the Social Media to draw the attention of government to the observations noticed in this project.

“Incidentally, it was brought to my attention last night by a colleague in government at about 3am this morning and I got in touch with my Functioning Permanent Secretary and Zonal Engineer to see for ourselves.

“Here we are now and having gone through the stretch of the bridge, we have noticed some anomalies on the expansion joints and the Zonal Engineer has confirmed that the contracting firm had been written before now to get back to site and fix those expansion joints across the length of the bridge.

“Furthermore more we have also discovered that most of the kerbs on the access road are falling off the embankment and this requires that the firm comes back to address those failures to reduce the threat it posses to the commuters on this road.

“We will write to the contractor to come back to site and address the anomalies that we have noticed on this important road so that the project can be done according to specification.

“This is to ensure we have value for every kobo spent so that residents of this area and visitors alike will use this road safely as is the intention of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.”

Youth President of Beneku Community Okechukwu Otuya and Secretary, Izu Louis, commended the Commissioner for his prompt response and called on the state government to prevail on the contractor to correct all the errors observed.
