DICI Marks Int’l Day of Zero Waste, Targeting Reduction in Consumer-Level Food Waste to Promote Climate Mitigation

By Emeka Nwokocha

A non-governmental organization, Development Initiative for Community Impact (DICI), has unveiled expanded programmes to mark this year’s International Day of Zero Waste.

The initiative focuses on raising societal awareness about the environmental and resource impacts of consumer-level food waste.

In a statement issued by the Acting Executive Director of DICI, Mr. Tejiri Leo Jehian, the organization emphasized that the International Day of Zero Waste highlights the urgent need to shift toward sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Mr. Jehian noted that the 2026 global campaign centres on food waste under the slogan “Zero Waste Starts On Your Plate.”

“Food waste is not merely a matter of discarded leftovers; it is a multidimensional crisis,” Mr. Leo Jehian stated.

“Data shows that about 19% of the global total food available to consumers is wasted each year. This inefficiency carries a staggering environmental footprint, causing significant harm to the ecosystem. Wasted food accounts for approximately 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to methane released when organic waste decomposes in landfills. In the same vein, the water, land, energy, and labour invested in producing that food are squandered, exacerbating resource scarcity and undermining climate resilience.”

The Ag. M.D, in his statement, further noted that while food waste occurs across the entire supply chain, households and individual consumers are responsible for a significant share, making consumer behaviour a critical leverage point for change.

“The 2026 theme recognizes that the journey toward zero waste must begin in our kitchens, on our plates, and in our daily choices,”  he added.

To translate awareness into action, DICI has organized a dedicated webinar forum designed to connect individuals, communities, and organizations with practical strategies, policy insights, and collaborative solutions.

According to him, the overarching goal of the event is to inspire and equip participants with the knowledge, tools, and motivation to reduce food waste at the consumer level, thereby contributing to climate mitigation and the broader zero-waste movement.

He further added that “the event would raise awareness of the environmental and resource impacts of consumer-level food waste, also showcasing practical, actionable strategies for reducing food waste that aligns with the slogan, “Zero waste starts on your plate.”

Mr. Leo noted that the International Day of Zero Waste 2026 serves as a call to action for individuals, businesses, and governments to prioritize reduction strategies, encouraging consumers to embrace mindful purchasing, proper storage, and composting.

2027 DTHA ISOKO SOUTH CONSTITUENCY I: Emede Development Initiative Labels Consensus Candidate Selection a Joke

By Kelvin Ohoror

The Emede Development Initiative has labeled the consensus candidate selection of one Prince Kola Dennis Obrogo as a mere joke, that the kangaroo process they used is not in the interest of other aspirants and APC party faithfuls from the community.

The group led by its coordinator, Comrade Odomero Ogbere in statement which was made available to newsmen frowned at the news of the kangaroo process, aimed at disenfranchising some constituents who are vying for the Isoko South Constituency I seat in Delta State House of Assembly, come 2027 general elections.

The statement reads in parts; “We have been observing the political developments in Emede with very keen interest. For the first time in the history of Emede the community could appear to parade 11 persons intending to vie for the seat of Isoko South Constituency 1 in the Delta State House of Assembly. Yes! it is believed that the Constituency 1 seat should rotate to Emede by an unwritten political zoning which has been practiced over time between Emede, Oleh and Irri, the three communities that made up the Isoko South Constituency 1”.

The group believe that “This big brother zoning arrangement has been working overtime like what has a Divine Heaven stamp as the only time the Political leadership mistakenly allowed an incumbent from Oleh to get a second tenure ticket he lost the seat to an opposition Party candidate from Irri at the general election”.

They opined that “And since then the political class refused to jettison the norm of the 3 communal rotational arrangements. And this was despite the fact that all incumbents have always sought for a reelection but are always humbled at the primaries”.

According to the statement; “What is more worrisome about the Emede current political development is the present claim by one of the aspirants by name Prince Dennis Kola Obrogo on social media platforms and through messages he is personally sending to everybody especially the political class in Isoko and Delta State that he has been endorsed and elected as the sole APC candidate for Isoko South Constituency 1 through mock primary election done at Emede”.

The group further said that “Impeccable source reaching us says that the process he claimed led to his emergence as an endorsed sole candidate of APC in the forthcoming 2027 election was a manipulation by Prophet Jones Erue, the former APC State Chairman who has been boycotting all State stakeholders meeting and functions of the Party but now chooses to confined himself to the local politics of organizing and endorsing candidates in a way and manner that is usually questionable.”

Continuing, the statement also affirmed that, “the erstwhile All Progressive Congress Chairman in Delta State, Prophet Jones Erue, did it in the time of Chief Ogaga Ifowodo versus Michael Paul Emumena Delta State House of Assembly APC primaries in 2021 which eventually killed the political career of Ogaga Ifowodo, a Literature and legal icon”, noting that, “he equally did it to Mr. Vincent Egbogbo, the immediate past APC LGA Chairman in the just concluded LGA congress. Even when the whole political leadership is taking a direction, Prophet Jones is holding endorsement meeting for Mr. Egbogbo giving him and a section of Oleh people hope that he is helping them to actualize Egbogbo mandate at Abuja.”

The group in the statement lamented that, “Prophet Jones is at it again, giving Prince Dennis Obrogo another illegal endorsement. As the illegal endorsement was tearing the community apart. We gathered that Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas who happened to come from Emede summoned a meeting to Elomaz Hotel, Asaba to discuss the political development in the community with a view of nipping a political crisis in the board”.

“We also learned authoritatively that the Senator haven’t heard a briefing from Hon. Orezi Esievo and Pastor Austin Igbine and all the intended aspirants acknowledged that what Prophet Jones did was illegal, unconstitutional, deceitful but however, he will appeal if we could allow it be as he doesn’t want to interfere in the affairs of selecting a preferred aspirant from Emede.

That his reason is because the one he did in 2015 turn into a strained relationship with Pastor Austin Igbine a long time friend, big brother and political ally and a host of others.”

“At the end of the meeting hosted by the Senator all other aspirants withdrew from the race except Hon. Emakpor Odogu (I Have A Dream) who claimed it is his turn citing his 24 years ambition and this being his fourth time of contesting for the position highlighting his growing political popularity. And Prince Dennis Kola Obrogo who is parading himself as the winner of the Prophet Jones illegally conducted primaries when the Party has not released guidelines”.

The group further frowned at Prince Dennis Kola Obrogo parading himself as the sole APC candidate in the forthcoming election. They think this misinformation is a desperation taken too far.

Ofagbe Community Protests, Demands Revocation of Isoko Ring Road Contract Over Alleged Contractor Incompetence

By Kelvin Ohoror

Residents of Ofagbe Community in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State have staged a protest over the prolonged delay and alleged poor execution of the 24-kilometre Isoko Ring Road project, calling on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to revoke the contract awarded to Dora-Dan Global Resources.

The protest, led by the President-General of the community, Engr. Cyril Jeke, saw demonstrators express frustration over what they described as the contractor’s inability to deliver on the critical infrastructure project despite multiple interventions by the state government.

Speaking during the protest, Engr. Jeke accused the contractor of a “clear lack of capacity and competence,” noting that the project has remained largely uncompleted years after it was awarded during the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

According to the community, the road, which traverses Ellu, Ovrode, Ofagbe, Orie-Irri, Okpe-Isoko, Uro-Irri, and Ada-Irri, was initially scheduled for completion by December 2022.

However, they lamented that the project remains far from completion, leaving residents to grapple with worsening living conditions.

Jeke recalled that several high-level interventions had been made to salvage the situation, including a fact-finding visit by the Deputy Governor and an inspection by Governor Oborevwori in March 2025.

“These efforts led to an upward review of the contract sum to enable improved performance by the contractor. Despite the financial adjustment, the community said there has been no meaningful progress on the project.”

He further disclosed that a strategic meeting held in June 2025, involving stakeholders, government officials, and the contractor, facilitated by the Special Adviser on Project Monitoring and Audit, Engr. Dr. Goodnews Agbi, resulted in a commitment by Dora-Dan Global Resources to remobilise to site and accelerate work.
“That promise has not been fulfilled in any meaningful way,” the statement added.

While acknowledging assurances from the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, that the state government remains committed to completing the project, the community insisted that the situation on the ground contradicts such assurances.

Describing the pace of work as “snail-like and unacceptable,” the protesters warned that continued delays would further worsen the plight of residents, especially with the rainy season approaching.

“The road has become a nightmare for commuters and residents. Economic activities are crippled, access to essential services is severely affected, and our people are enduring untold hardship daily,” the statement read.

Protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “The Contractor is Incompetent, Revoke the Contract Now,” “Government Funds, Zero Progress — Why?”, “This Delay is Unacceptable,” and “Development Delayed is Development Denied,” among others.

They highlighted the human and economic toll of the delay, noting that farmers are unable to transport their produce, pregnant women struggle to access healthcare, and communities risk being cut off entirely during the rainy season.

The community, therefore, urged Governor Oborevwori to terminate the existing contract and re-award it to a more competent contractor with proven capacity to deliver within a reasonable timeframe.

“We have confidence in the Governor’s MORE Agenda, but that commitment must be reflected in firm decisions when a contractor has clearly failed,” the leaders stated, adding that the patience of the people has been overstretched.

Responding to the protest, the Chief of Staff, Government House Asaba, Hon. Johnson Erijo, commended the community for adopting a peaceful approach in drawing government attention to their concerns rather than resorting to self-help.

Erijo acknowledged that the Deputy Governor, the Commissioner for Works, and the Governor had previously made commitments regarding the road, assuring the protesters that their grievances would be communicated to the governor.

“I will bring your protest to the attention of His Excellency. As you rightly noted, the government has zero tolerance for shoddy jobs. Necessary action will be taken accordingly,” he said.

He further assured the community that the state government would look into their plight and take appropriate steps to address the situation.

Oborevwori Attends Southern Delta University Maiden Convocation, Approves Key Projects

By Kelvin Ohoror

Delta State Governor and Visitor to Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Saturday approved critical infrastructural projects as the institution graduated 1,231, including four First Class students at its maiden convocation ceremony, marking a historic milestone in its evolution.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude to God for the successful take-off and growth of the institution, describing the maiden convocation as “the first of many remarkable achievements” for a university founded on hard work, resilience and excellence.

Earlier in the day, the Governor commissioned several projects, including laboratories and workshops for the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, male and female hostels, the Faculty of Computing complex, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences building constructed by the Delta State Government.

Oborevwori paid tribute to his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for the foresight in establishing the university in 2021 as Delta State University of Science and Technology, noting that he presided over the legislative process as Speaker of the State House of Assembly at the time.

“Despite criticisms driven by narrow political interests, the benefits are now clear. Thousands of students who may not have had access to university education have been admitted, trained and graduated,” he said.

He explained that the amendment of the law to rename the institution as Southern Delta University was aimed at broadening its academic scope and enabling the accreditation of more programmes, in line with the administration’s vision of inclusive and responsive education.

The Governor approved key requests presented by the Vice-Chancellor, including additional ambulances, equipment for the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, hostels for medical students, a Faculty of Law complex, completion of the Computer-Based Test Centre, perimeter fencing and other critical infrastructure.

While commending Engr Godwin Izomor for giving automatic employment to the overall best graduating student, Oborevwori announced a cash award of ₦5 million for the overall best graduating student, as well as ₦1 million each for the other three First Class graduands. He maintained that outstanding performance must always be rewarded.

A total of 1,231 students graduated at the ceremony, including four First Class honours recipients, 421 Second Class Upper Division, 796 Second Class Lower Division and 10 in other categories.

Earlier in his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jacob Oboreh, described the maiden convocation as a watershed moment in the history of the institution, tracing its evolution from a College of Agriculture to Delta State Polytechnic, and eventually to a full-fledged university in 2021.

He noted that since inception, the university has expanded from six faculties with 45 programmes to 11 faculties with 89 programmes, all approved and accredited by the National Universities Commission.

Oboreh highlighted major infrastructural developments, including the construction of faculty complexes, laboratories, hostels, internal road networks, staff quarters, a perimeter fence and procurement of over 900 computers.

He also acknowledged the donation of ten fully furnished workshops by Engineer Godwin Izomo and the completion of previously abandoned projects, including a 1,200-seater auditorium.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed for further government support, particularly in the areas of medical accreditation requirements, power supply through an independent power plant, construction of additional hostels, establishment of a Teaching Hospital in Ozoro, perimeter fencing and completion of the Computer-Based Examination Centre.

Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Ambassador Godson Echegile, expressed appreciation to the Ozoro and Orerokpe communities for their support and commended the Convocation Lecturer, General Alexander Ogomudia (rtd), for delivering a thought-provoking lecture titled, “Beyond Oil: The University and the Future of the Niger Delta.”

In his valedictory speech, the overall best graduating student, Frank Akaine, expressed gratitude to God, the State Government, the University management, lecturers and parents for their support throughout their academic journey.

He described the pioneer class as trailblazers who endured the uncertainties of a newly established institution with courage and determination.

“We came in as the first set, unsure of what the future held, but today we leave as proud alumni of a fast-rising university. This achievement is a testament to resilience, sacrifice and the power of vision,” Akaine said.

He encouraged his fellow graduates to uphold the values of integrity, excellence and hard work instilled in them, pledging that the pioneer alumni would be worthy ambassadors of Southern Delta University.

The ceremony drew an array of dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, academics and community stakeholders, marking a defining chapter in the history of Southern Delta University, Ozoro.
