CONVOCATION: Natural Resources Alone Do Not Guarantee Development-Gen Ogomudia

By Marvis Osiobe-Eterigho

The former Chief of Defence Staff and Pro-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka, General Alexander O. Ogomudia has said that natural resources alone do not guarantee development but knowledge, institutions, leadership and human capital is what transforms resources into sustainable progress.

He said this while delivering the maiden convocation lecture titled; “Beyond Oil:The University and The Future of The Niger Delta” at Southern Delta University, Ozoro, last Wednesday, 26, February, 2026.

In his words, “We live in an era defined not by stability, but by transition. The foundations upon which nations built their economies in the twentieth century are shifting under the weight of technological disruption, environmental urgency and geopolitical realignment. Digital technologies are reshaping work, learning governance and even identity. Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, automation and data analytics are redefining productivity and competitive advantage. This is where the university is indispensable.”

Speaking further, Gen Ogomudia stated that in this emerging order, the future will not belong primarily to those who own natural resources. “It will belong to those who can learn continuously, adapt rapidly, innovate intelligently and build resilient institutions.” He added.

Speaking on the effect of this global shift on the Niger Delta region, Gen Ogomudia said it presents both profound risk and historic opportunity. “For Niger Delta, the question is no longer whether diversification is necessary. It is how quickly and how intelligently it can be achieved. A development strategy anchored solely on petroleum is increasingly precarious.”

Moreover, the Pro-Chancellor of DELSU described a university as the primary site where societies prepare for transition. “They produce the scientists who design renewable technologies, the engineers who build resilient infrastructure, the policymakers who craft regulatory frameworks, and the entrepreneurs who launch new industries.”

He however added that universities must evolve themselves. “Curricula designed for yesterday’s economy cannot adequately prepare students for tomorrow’s realities. Interdisciplinary learning, digital fluency, research commercialization and community engagement must become core components of higher education.”

He charged the host university – Southern Delta University to be a knowledge hub for the southern Delta region and beyond, a policy think-tank for state and local governments, a talent pipeline for emerging industries and a bridge between global ideas and local realities. “As a young institution, Southern Delta University has a rare advantage: it can design itself for relevance from the start by embedding community engagement into its curriculum, reward applied to interdisciplinary research, encourage innovation and collaboration and uphold academic freedom and institutional integrity.”

Responding to the speech, the Vice Chancellor of Southern Delta University (SDU), Prof Jacob Snapps Oboreh gave a word of appreciation to Gen Ogomudia for impacting the institution with such knowledge.

Dignitaries present during the lecture were Prof. Arthur Efeoghene Essaghah, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of SDU, Prof. Akpovughaye Taiga, Provost Orerokpe campus, Prof Ogochukwu T. Emiri, the university Librarian amongst others.

SDU CONVOCATION: Natural resources alone are not guarantee for development – Gen. Ogomudia

By Ekemena Azaino

The former Chief of Defense Staff and Pro-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka, Gen. Alexander Ogomudia (Rtd) has admonished the Niger Deltans to look beyond oil to embrace accelerated development as natural resources alone do not guarantee development.

He made this admonition on Wednesday February 25, 2026 while delivering the Maiden Convocation Lecture of the Southern Delta University (SDU) Ozoro, titled “Beyond Oil: The University and the Future of the Niger Delta” at the University Auditorium, stressing that to attain a sustainable future for the Niger Delta, there must be economic planning reconnection with ecological regeneration, as the ecological abundance that once sustained the region has become increasingly fragile.

The General decried the reduction of the Niger Delta region to a single narrative of only oil despite it’s abundance and adversity, wealth and want irrespective of it’s contribution and contradiction, stressing that “This reduction obscures the complexity of a region whose geography, history and political economy have been shaped by both internal and external forces”

Gen. Ogomudia emphasized that the Niger Delta is more than oil being a landscape where ecology, history and politics intersect, noting that “what transforms resources into sustainable progress is knowledge, institutions, leadership, and human capital”.

He stated that “A sustainable future for the Niger Delta must reconnect economic planning with ecological regeneration”, emphasizing that sustainable development is only possible when Niger Delta reconnect economic planning with ecological regeneration with the availability of the prerequisite knowledge, established institutions, proactive leadership and qualified human capital.

According to him, “We now live in an era defined not by stability but by transition. The foundations upon which nations built their economies in the twentieth century are under the weight of technological disruption, environmental urgency and geographical realignment”.

The Pro-Chancellor stressed that “the future will no longer belong to those who own natural resources but those who acquire knowledge continuously, adapt rapidly and innovate intelligently”.

He further noted that “Regions, like the Niger Delta, rich in natural resources sometimes experience slower development, weaker institutions and heightened conflicts compared to less-endowed areas, arising from intensified competition over revenue, reshaped political incentives and fostered dependency on centralized allocations, adding that “Hence, by having a higher knowledge economy, there would be greater creativity, adaptability and problem-solvers in the region”.

He therefore charged universities to continuously evolve in order to adequately prepare students for future realities by enhancing interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking, digital fluency, research commercialization and community engagement to give them competitive advantage globally.

Furthermore, he implored the universities in the region to serve as anchors for stability amid uncertainty, provide evidence-based policy guidance for post-oil planning, incubate startups focused on renewable energy, environmental remediation, marine biotechnology and digital services.

Further to the delivery of the convocation lecture, Gen. Ogomudia also advocated for economic diversification in the Niger Delta which should be region-specific, evidence based and future-oriented, whereby universities must play the dominant role by developing pathways for agriculture and the blue economy, environmental restoration, technology, creativity and entrepreneurship.

He therefore charged the graduands of the institution to cultivate the exceptional qualities of competence, courage and character, challenging them to contribute meaningfully to the society that has invested in their education as professionals and to also act with integrity; as entrepreneurs who create sustainable enterprises; scientists who pursue solutions; educators who inspire critical thinking and public servants who prioritize the common good.

SDU Ozoro Set to Hold Maiden Convocation Ceremony Feb 28

The Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro has set to hold its maiden convocation ceremony since the establishment of the school in 2021 by the former Governor of Delta State Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Southern Delta University Ozoro, Prof. Jacob Snapps Oboreh made this known on Tuesday February 24, 2026 while addressing journalists during a press conference at the institution’s auditorium.

The University which was formerly known as Delta State University of Science and Technology was established alongside the University of Agbor and Dennis Osadebey University, Asaba in October 2021.

According to him, when the three universities were established by the Delta government, many Nigerians including some Deltans felt it will be practically impossible for the Delta State government to run or manage four own universities successfully, noting that as time goes on they were proven wrong.

Prof. Oboreh opined that, “the four Universities in Delta State are well positioned and they have continued to thrive better than some states that own only one university. The evidences are very clear when you visit any of the Universities. Delta State University, Abraka been the first state own university has continued to stand tall among Nigeria universities and the three newly established universities are not lagging behind either”.

He insisted that “in our own case we have thrived tremendously in the areas of academics, research and development, we have conducted ground breaking researches in various faculties of the university; for example in our Faculty of Engineering, we have conducted research in areas that have never been researched into in the past. They conducted a research of turning waste into power generation, this research has been tested successfully in the faculty”.

He further said that in the area of academic excellence, the students of the university have attended a research competition organized by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and they came out first among 52 universities in Nigeria, adding that in the faculty of Computing the students have also been able to develop software to solve real life situations via Artificial Intelligence System, with software that solves local problems in accounting information system, management information system.

He also stated that the students also design structures that meet up with international standard, that look as if you are in France, Italy or Time Square in Brooklyn, New York, acknowledging that. he is highly impressed with the results achieved so far by the university.

“It might interest you to know that in 2021, the university started with just 6 Faculties – Faculty of Agriculture, Administration, Computing, Science, Environmental Science and faculty of Engineering with 45 programmes duly approved and accredited by National University Commission (NUC).

“Within a short time we have grown; today the university has a 11 Faculties housing 89 programmes”.

He added that “Our students population when we started was just two thousand, two hundred and twenty five; as of today, it has increased to Seven thousand, five hundred which means we can admit seven thousand, five hundred students every year. When we start admitting such numbers, that means in 4 years we can admit Thirty thousand students. Hopefully, by the year 2028, the university will have Thirty thousand as estimated students population”.

Prof. Oboreh appreciates Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the universities, stating that the only one university would not have been able to admit the numbers of students the four universities are having now.

He stated further that the University can stand tall in terms of qualified staffs, and that the state government has given them the opportunities and freedom to employ qualified staffs into the university, that there are a lot of PHD holders, Professors drawn from various universities across Nigeria because the University has better conditions of service.

On positioning the university properly in terms of infrastructure, Prof. Oboreh asserted that the management of the university has continue to restructure the university environment in terms of infrastructure development, that so far within their capacity the university has constructed houses to accommodate principal staffs.

According to him, they also constructed a storey building with five laboratory workshops and studio for Faculty of Environment Science, a two storey building complex for the Faculty of Computing with 126 staff offices, two lecture halls and convinience in each staff offices, they also constructed two storey building for the faculty of Science with 126 offices, two lecture hall and convinience in each offices among other many projects.

DELTA 2031: Kpokpogri Urges Strategic Succession Beyond Zoning Politics

By Michael Ilaya

As political conversations gradually shift toward 2031 in Delta State, Comrade Prince Kpokpogri has cautioned stakeholders against what he describes as a potential “succession mistake” driven solely by zoning sentiments rather than competence and leadership capacity.

In a strongly worded position statement, Kpokpogri, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Integrity Forum and Publisher of Integrity Watchdog Magazine, urged political leaders and citizens to prioritize continuity, experience, and inclusiveness in determining the state’s next leadership trajectory.

At the center of his intervention is the ongoing administration of Sheriff Oborevwori, whose MORE Agenda blueprint, he noted, has laid a foundation for infrastructural expansion, economic inclusion, and social stability across the state, thereby suggesting a consolidation of the MORE Agenda beyond 2031.

According to Kpokpogri, as the governor’s tenure progresses, attention must gradually move from governance implementation to safeguarding continuity beyond 2031.

“The central concern should not merely be zoning,” he emphasized, “but competence, experience, inclusiveness, and proven leadership capacity.”

By the state’s prevailing political understanding, power is expected to rotate to Delta South in 2031. This places potential aspirants from the Isoko and Ijaw ethnic nationalities at the forefront of discussions. However, in as much as power must shift to Delta South in 2031, caution must be applied to get the right choice for the State.

However, Kpokpogri warned against reducing the succession debate to financial muscle, early political positioning, or media visibility.

He stressed that aspirants must demonstrate the ability to manage Delta’s ethnic diversity and secure broad-based acceptability across Delta Central, Delta North, and Delta South.

“The ultimate test must remain the capacity to unite the senatorial districts and govern in the collective interest of all Deltans,” he stated.

Beyond the governorship, Kpokpogri highlighted the importance of strong representation at the National Assembly in shaping Delta’s federal influence ahead of 2027 and 2031, noting that those who must represent the three senatorial zones must be seen as strategic choices in the political scheme of things.

In Delta Central, he referenced the national visibility and legislative assertiveness of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, noting that effective Senate representation could strengthen federal collaboration and political leverage for the state.

In Delta North, he acknowledged the continued political relevance of former governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, describing his experience and federal networks as assets capable of influencing Delta’s long-term political direction. He therefore canvassed the need to have Ifeanyi Okowa go to the National Assembly to represent Delta North in the Senate as a strategic national political game-changer.

Kpokpogri emphasized that his recognition of political actors across party lines was not rooted in personal alliances, but in what he described as objective evaluation of competence and performance.

For Delta South stakeholders, he urged careful assessment of legislative performance, visibility, and advocacy strength when determining future Senate representation, maintaining that anybody that must represent Delta South at the Senate in 2027 must have broad-based acceptability of the people.

Ultimately, he argued, the state’s leadership transition must focus on Industrialization and job creation, Fiscal discipline and institutional strengthening, Equitable distribution of projects, and Sustainable economic expansion.

He maintained that Delta State’s political class must avoid decisions rooted in narrow interests or emotional sentiment.

While expressing optimism about the state’s developmental direction under Governor Oborevwori, Kpokpogri warned that poor succession choices could disrupt current gains.

“Delta’s future must be built on stability, inclusion, and strategic governance,” he concluded, urging party leaders, political stakeholders, and citizens to approach 2031 with maturity and foresight.

As early permutations begin to surface ahead of 2027 and beyond, Kpokpogri’s intervention adds to what is expected to be an evolving debate over competence, zoning, and the future political architecture of Delta State.

Chief Ogodo Donates 120 Chairs to Enhwe Comprehensive High School

By Kelvin Ohoror

The former President-General of Enhwe Community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief Michael Ogodo, has donated 120 classroom chairs valued at millions of naira to the Enhwe Comprehensive High School, Enhwe, to improve the learning conditions of students.

The donation follows recent public concerns raised on social media within the Isoko Nation that students of the school were sitting on bare floors during classes due to the shortage of furniture.

This is not the first time Chief Ogodo has supported schools in the community. About five years ago, in collaboration with Enhwe indigenes in the diaspora, he donated chairs worth millions of naira to the Oviota Primary School, Enhwe.

Speaking in a telephone interview with The Trumpet Correspondent, Chief Ogodo described his relationship with Enhwe Comprehensive High School as longstanding and deeply personal.

“This should be about the fifth time I am donating chairs to the school. Between 2015 and 2019, I personally employed English Language and mathematics teachers and paid their salaries,” he said.

He added that education played a major role in shaping his life and success.

“It is education that shaped my life. I do not joke with education. God brought me from Enhwe for a purpose, and I believe giving back through education is the best way to serve my community,” he stated.

Chief Ogodo also urged the students to take their studies seriously and ensure proper care of the newly donated chairs and other school facilities.

Receiving the items on behalf of the school, the Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Council, Friday Warri, who is an old boy of the school, expressed his appreciation to the donor for his generosity.

He noted that though Chief Ogodo is not a politician, he has chosen to use his resources to positively impact the lives of students in the community.

The Council Chairman encouraged the students to make good use of the chairs and avoid any acts that could lead to their damage.

Principal of Enhwe Comprehensive High School, Mr. Ilah Jonathan, commended Chief Ogodo for responding to the urgent needs of the school.

However, he highlighted ongoing security challenges facing the institution, revealing that hoodlums and thieves have been vandalising and stealing the school property.

The principal appealed to the Local Government Council and community stakeholders to assist in constructing lodges for the principal and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to enable them reside within the school premises for improved security and supervision.

Among those present at the presentation ceremony were the Secretary to the Local Government Council, Mr. Zino Osuofa, Vice President-General of Enhwe Clan Development Association, Prince Isaac Ohoror, and other community leaders.
