The Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro Chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), Comrade Martins Egwarhe, has commended the university management for improving the welfare of non-academic staff.
He made this commendation during a chat with The Isoko Nation reporter, last weekend describing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunny Ijirhevwe Awhefeada, and the Registrar, Mrs Ejiroghene Etobro, as “God-sent” for the positive changes they have brought to staff welfare within a short period.
He said one of the major achievements of the present administration was the university’s membership of the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA), adding that it was the first time SDU was joining the association.
According to him, “ANUPA provides regular training and conferences to help improve the knowledge and skills of university administrators” he stated.
Comrade Egwarhe explained that “full membership of ANUPA is open to staff with Bachelor’s degrees, while holders of Higher National Diplomas (HND) can become affiliate members”.
Speaking on salary and promotion, the NASU chairman said such matters were handled by the government and not the university management, adding that the state governor had reportedly approved recently a 35 per cent increase in salaries for workers in state tertiary institutions.
On discipline, Comrade Egwarhe advised students to be polite and patient when dealing with non-academic staff, saying, “the workers are doing their best to serve the university community.”
He said the cooperation between staff and students was important to the smooth running and development of the university.
