Your intervention needed in critical areas in the development of the state – Aruakpor tells Oborevwori

By Emmanuel Ekebe & Michael Ilaya

Bishop of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Oleh Diocese, Delta State, Rt. Rev. John Aruakpor, has called on the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently intervene in the critical challenges confronting the ‘MORE Agenda’ implementation including insecurity, lack of electricity, equitable distribution of political offices and dividends in the state.
Delivering his Bishop Charge at the Second Session of the Ninth Synod of the Diocese held at St Michael’s Church, Emevor, Isoko North Local Government Area, Friday, Aruakpor brought the issues of insecurity, absence of power supply, while emphasing that nothing should derail the governor from the noble stance of service without ethnic bias.
The Bishop noted that the governor has made giant strides in redirecting the economy of the state but there is the need to do much more.
While congratulating Governor Oborevwori on his second-year anniversary and achievements within this very short space of time and the presentation of the-State-of-State to the State House of Assembly which has thrown a lot of light on certain issues.
Highlighting some of the achievements, the Bishop said: “it gladdens our heart as a church to note that the State under your watch has reduced the state debt profile drastically while going on with the gigantic projects across the state.
According to the Bishop, the Diocese is most grateful for the unprecedented speed of work in the Ughelli-Asaba road dualisation project; the school of Health Technology, Ovrode which is almost set for commissioning; the College of Medical Sciences, Southern Delta University, Ozoro; the transformation of Warri and its environ, to mention but a few.
“We also commend the way you have taken it upon yourself to go around, to ensure quality job delivery.
“We are much more gladdened to note your giant strides in the redirecting of the economy of the State, as you recently approved a whopping some of 1.1 billion naira for investment through Private Public Partnership approach in the agricultural sector, for which the Aviara rice farm is a beneficiary. As we expect MORE of these, the church will continue to pray for you to finish strong in 2027 and beyond.
However, decrying the state of insecurity in the State, the Bishop said “though the issue of security is a national one, we have chosen to also bring it to the doorsteps of the State. The infiltration of bandits, herdsmen and other criminal gangs into the State demands urgent intervention by the State Government. The activities of kidnappers seem to be waking up again, making people to sleep with one eye open.
“The church of God feels that the security bodies, ranging from the military to the Community vigilante should form a strong synergy to bring the tide to a halt.
On provision of electricity: “We have observed that one of the major banes of development in the State is the absence of power supply. This has led to the increase in the cost of running businesses, high cost of end products and has led to many folding up their establishments.
“We view this as a case of washing our faces with spittle even when living right inside the ocean. With the much availability of gas that is been flared, we call on the State, Local Government Councils and communities to partner with relevant bodies to convert same to electricity.
Earlier, drawing on the theme of this year’s Synod ‘Sonship Manifestation -Groaning Creation Awaits the Sons of Light’, the Bishop emphasized that “from heavens perspective, the movement of sons of God is binary: You either move like a king or you remain in spiritual helplessness even with His spirit inside you. You either act in faith like the four lepers and win or refrain to act and fall in fear”.
Taking reference from Luke 20:19, the Bishop said: “But sons-men and women who understand divine timing, operate with wisdom, carry strategic weight, and move with heaven’s confidence”.
He explained that heaven does not micromanage but authorizes and watch.
“That the healing, the economic breakthrough we keep asking for in our families, our communities, our nation … isn’t delayed because God is reluctant but because the Sons are silent or ignorant of what they ought to do”.
In his goodwill message to the Synod, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sherriff Oborevwori, who was represented by his Senior Adviser to the Governor on Policy, Rt. Hon. Solomon Funkekeme said that “as followers of Christ, our manifestation begins with our personal relationship with God, our Creator.
Quoting from Proverbs 11:11, the Governor said as a church, we must avoid negative speaking, rather strive to speak positively about our state and country, adding that we can be blessing and cursing at the same time.
Also quoting from Acts 11:26, Oborevwori charged the Christians to imbibe the spirit of unity as the world is looking up to christians who will be of moral influence as the church determines the direction in any society.
The Bishop’s Charge presentation was witnessed by an array of Bishops and Clergies from across the country including Rt. Revd. Bishop Muoghere Vincent, retired Bishop of Ughellli Diocese, Most Revd. Moses Yahaya, Bishop, Diocese of Kaduna, Rt. Revd. Ifedola Okupevi, Bishop, Diocese of Lagos, Rt. Revd. Ajiroghene Nwafili, Bishop, Ndokwa Diocese and a host of others.
The Bishop charge was rounded off with a launch during which over a hundred million naira was realized on the spot.

Oborevwori prioritizing quality, accountability in infrastructure delivery — Aniagwu

By Kelvin Ohoror

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering commitment to quality infrastructure, financial transparency, and the empowerment of local contractors.

Speaking during a live interview with ADBN Television, Aniagwu emphasized the administration’s deliberate strategy to match project scope with contractor capacity, particularly when engaging indigenous firms.

“It is a disservice to assign a five-star project to a two-star contractor,” he said. “Just like a child must crawl before they walk and then run, we are gradually building the capacity of local contractors by assigning them smaller projects initially.”

He noted that several indigenous firms have progressed from minor assignments to executing more complex jobs such as short-span bridges and roads extending up to 20–30 kilometers. A notable example, he said, is the Orere Bridge project, which is currently being handled by a local contractor and progressing well.

Aniagwu, however, explained that while some major infrastructure projects are still awarded to experienced expatriate firms due to technical demands, most of the materials and labour used such as cement, sand, bitumen, and iron rods, are sourced locally.

“This ensures that funds circulate within our local economy, creating jobs and supporting small businesses,” he stated.

The commissioner stressed that the Oborevwori administration remains firmly committed to empowering indigenous contractors while maintaining high standards.

“We are making steady progress. Every year, we allocate up to ₦2.1 billion specifically for inter-local government roads, in addition to other major road projects that link various LGAs.”

He also highlighted a recent inspection tour by senior editors and veteran journalists who visited multiple project sites across the state.

According to Aniagwu, the visitors were highly impressed by both the quality of infrastructure and Delta State’s consistency in honouring payment commitments.

“They were amazed that once a project certificate is verified in Delta, Governor Oborevwori pays 100%, no delays, no excuses. I say with confidence, that no other state in Nigeria matches that level of consistency.”

He attributed this financial discipline to the governor’s leadership style, which emphasizes results over media visibility.

“Governor Oborevwori is one of the few governors who hardly travels. In the past two years, he visits Abuja occasionally and mostly when there are issues that are beneficial to Delta state and strictly for important state matters.”

Aniagwu added that the governor’s hands-on leadership, backed by a proactive State Executive Council, has ensured that many of the administration’s achievements speak for themselves, even without elaborate commissioning ceremonies.

“There’s so much going on that we haven’t even publicized. But when you come to Delta, the projects speak for themselves.”

He urged citizens and stakeholders to continue supporting the administration, noting that Governor Oborevwori is laying a foundation for inclusive growth and sustainability.

Aniagwu also commended the governor’s recent midterm address to the State House of Assembly, describing it as a historic moment that signposts transparency and public accountability.

“He is the first governor in Nigeria to formally present a midterm report to the legislature, outlining achievements and projections. It is a rare demonstration of leadership responsibility.”

He highlighted key developmental gains across multiple sectors, including roads, education, housing, and healthcare. He noted that over 150 primary health centers have been revamped, with secondary and tertiary institutions also undergoing upgrades.

“We are procuring advanced medical equipment, MRI machines, CT scanners, and more to elevate healthcare delivery across the state.”

While refraining from naming specific contractors to avoid undue promotion, Aniagwu acknowledged the vital roles played by both local and international firms in the state’s ongoing transformation.

“Their work speaks volumes, and we deeply appreciate the professionalism they bring.”

He concluded by reaffirming the administration’s focus on impactful governance, transparency, and long-term development, saying, “Governor Oborevwori remains committed to leaving a legacy of inclusive growth, good governance, and accountable service delivery.”

CRY FOR JUSTICE: Activist Ejumudo Charges Bayelsa Police Command to Fish Out Police Driver Who Crushed Boy to Death in Okuokoko

By Emeka Nwokocha

Following the crushing of a fourteen years old boy, Wisdom Chukwudi to death by a police officer and driver of a Police Hilux van, on Monday 16 June, 2025, along Okuokoko expressway, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta state, a courageous rights defender, Activist Kelvin Ejumudo has called on the Bayelsa State Police Command to fish out the driver to face the law, saying “Any attempt to compromise the law will be strongly resisted.”

Activist Ejumudo who doubles as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Human Rights, made the call recently while speaking to journalists about the tragic accident.

He expressed worry, saying “The police have neither visited the bereaved mother of the boy, Jennifer Otono nor taken any positive action in line with the laws to ensure the deceased Wisdom Chukwudi gets justice.

Lamenting the development, Activist Ejumudo bitterly said, “Master Wisdom Chukwudi was hit by Police Hilux Van on a convoy to Bayelsa State, driven by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), on Monday 16th June 2025, along the Effurun-Ughelli expressway, Okuokokor and he died on the spot.

“The mother of the deceased – a single parent, Jennifer Otono, is seriously grieving the sudden and tragic death of her son caused by a reckless police driver, a CSP attached to Bayelsa State Police Command who was on a convoy to Bayelsa State when he knocked down the boy.”

Activist Ejumudo stated that Jennifer Otono is seriously devastated on hearing the shattering news of the sudden death of her only son adding that her sorrow is now worsen by the lack of empathy on the part of the Police.”

He said, “The police only visited the scene of the accident just to tow the crashed Hilux van to a nearby police station without showing concern to the mother of the deceased.”

He reiterated, “I am using this medium to call on the Nigeria Police Force, Bayelsa State Command to fish out the CSP that drove the vehicle that knocked down Master Wisdom Chukwudi.”

He said, “We must place value on human life in this country and not the other way round,” threatening that “The human rights community will not hesitate to explore all legal and legitimate means to seek justice for late Wisdom Chukwudi if the said Police officer is not fished out within seven days and made to face justice.”

It will be recalled that reckless driving being exhibited by convoys with utter disregard for safety are endangering the lives of other road users.

This has regularly attracted public outcry as innocent citizens have severally been knocked down and killed.

But still, the Nigerian government is nonchalant about this undignifying behaviour that poses threat to public wellbeing.

“Let us stay united; you cannot pray and then turn around to curse. We must move forward together. With unity, more development will come. The love you have shown me must be repaid with service and appreciation.”

He also acknowledged greetings on the pages of newspapers from notable Nigerians. “I was overwhelmed by the number of people who reached out. It’s only God who can truly reward such love,” he added.

The Governor concluded his remarks with a prayer: “May joy, peace, and blessings never depart from your lives in Jesus’ name, I pray.”

By Kelvin Ohoror

The Delta State Government has embarked on a major initiative to enhance healthcare delivery across the state, beginning with the renovation of 150 Primary Health Centres and the construction of two-bedroom accommodation units, as part of the first phase of work on 441 centres statewide.

The Man, Rt. Hon. Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori

By Festus Ahon

“Great oaks,” it is often said, “grow from little acorns.” Though an age-old adage, it remains as true today as when it was first uttered.

In the life and journey of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, this wise saying finds vivid expression.

Born on June 19, 1963, to the family of Chief Samuel Oborevwori of Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori’s early education began at Alegbo Primary School, Effurun, where he completed his primary education in 1977. He proceeded to Oghareki Grammar School, Oghareki, for his secondary education, and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, in 2004. In 2010, he obtained a Master’s degree in the same field from Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.

Beyond his formal academic pursuits, Sheriff Oborevwori—who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly—has undertaken advanced studies in various prestigious institutions, further preparing him for the demands of leadership.

His educational credentials include: Certificate in Top Executive Leadership Programme, Manchester Business School, UK. Certificate in Legislative Framework for Budget Management, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. Certificate in Legislative Management and Leadership, International Law Institute, Washington D.C., USA. Certificate in Leading Inclusive Development, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.Certificate in Advanced Leadership Programme, University of Cambridge, UK.

He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC).

Widely regarded as an astute politician with a unique talent for grassroots mobilization, Sheriff Oborevwori’s political career spans both legislative and executive arms of government. He has also served at both the local and state levels of governance.

His public service journey includes: Councillor/Supervisory Councillor for Works, old Okpe Local Government Area (which then included present-day Udu and Uvwie LGAs), 1996. Special Assistant on Youth Development 2003–2006. Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Land Security, 2007–2010. State Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, 2009–2010. Senior Special Assistant on Security to the State Governor, 2012–2014.

Today, as Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori continues to demonstrate the leadership maturity, political savvy, and developmental focus that have defined his journey—a journey that began humbly but has grown into the towering oak of public service.

Yet, that is not all.

Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori served as the member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) from 2015 to 2019. He was elected Speaker of the Sixth Assembly in 2017 and re-elected Speaker of the Seventh Assembly in 2019—becoming the first Deltan to serve as Speaker across two consecutive assemblies. He also held key national leadership positions as Treasurer of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (2018–2020) and later as Deputy Chairman of the Conference (2020 until his election as Governor).

Associates describe Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as a deeply empathetic and perceptive leader—one whose love for people transcends status, faith, race, and culture. He is seen as a powerful embodiment of both continuity and change, a bridge builder with a familiar face and a refreshing new vision, clearly outlined in his administration’s MORE Agenda.

The MORE Agenda stands for: Meaningful Development; Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Under Meaningful Development, the Governor is committed to economic growth, environmental sustainability, human capital development, and the delivery of critical infrastructure.

With Opportunities for All, his administration promotes inclusiveness, equity, and fairness, ensuring that all stakeholders are engaged in the development process.

Through Realistic Reforms, he is building on the solid foundation laid by the previous administration under Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is focused on improving governance, enhancing service delivery, and strengthening public sector efficiency. His priorities include boosting the capacity of the civil service, advancing data-driven planning, and fully automating the state’s accounting and human resource management systems.

On Enhanced Peace and Security, Governor Oborevwori is engaging key stakeholders to foster dialogue and unity, promoting cultural and inter-community exchanges, empowering youths through productive ventures to reduce restiveness, and encouraging cooperation among security agencies. He is also strengthening early warning systems to ensure timely and effective conflict resolution.

MORE Agenda: Envisaged Goals and Outcomes

In Africa, it is often said that no one tells a man’s story better than the man himself. In this spirit, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori declares: “With our vision and mission driven by the gearwheel of MORE, I will listen more, do more, and achieve more.” This commitment is clearly articulated in his manifesto.

Today, after two years of dedicated implementation, the MORE Agenda is delivering tangible results across key sectors. Its outcomes include: Increased job creation, Growth in capital inflow, Higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Expansion in the export of raw and processed agricultural products, Strengthening of the state’s economy, Enhanced living standards for Deltans and residents, Environmental rejuvenation and sustainability, Upgraded infrastructure across the state, Improved educational and healthcare systems and greater social stability, reflected in enhanced security of lives and property.

The MORE Agenda continues to chart a progressive and inclusive path for Delta State, positioning it as a model of sustainable development in Nigeria.
