OANDO has neglected us for years, but let’s maintain peace – Warri urges protesters

The chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area, Hon. Warri Ovoke Friday, has recently urged protesters in Irri community to maintain peace and allow Oando company sufficient time to address their demands, as their concerns have been escalated to higher authorities.

Warri gave the directive while addressing protesters at Oil Flow Station in Irri community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, operated by Oando, who took over from Agip Oil Company.

Tensions erupted  on Monday as angry residents of the Irri community in the Isoko South Local Government Area staged a large-scale protest at the OANDO Flow Station, effectively halting operations. The community, comprising men, women, and youths, alleged that the oil giant had perpetuated longstanding marginalisation, neglect, and a blatant refusal to honour agreements spanning several years.

Chanting solidarity songs and brandishing placards with bold inscriptions such as “We Need Electricity”, “No Project Since 2017”, “Respect Our Traditional Rulers”, “We Need Indigenous Contractors”, and “OANDO Stop Exploiting Irri”, the protestors effectively blocked access to the facility, thereby crippling business activities in the area.

The peaceful demonstration, which commenced early in the week, conveyed a strong message to OANDO management, demanding urgent intervention and accountability. Protesters lamented the oil firm’s failure to implement provisions of the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) initially signed with NOAC prior to its acquisition by OANDO.

According to the community, OANDO has persistently disregarded calls for dialogue and reneged on promises made under the agreement.

Addressing the protesters, HRM Simon Wajutome Odhomo, the Odiologbo of Irri, stated that the community has been marginalized for an extended period. We have submitted numerous letters and initiated negotiations, yet no progress has been made. They operate on our land, extracting our resources, but provide no benefits in return, not even a courtesy visit to us since they commenced operations.

“We are affording them a two-week window to fulfil our demands. The council chairman and the commander of the 181 Battalion, Lt Col Dabo, are accompanying me on a peace mission. Let us return home and provide them with the opportunity to honour their commitments, ensuring the Oando company meets our collective demands.

“I do not have issues with them, but rather, let us permit them to address my people,” he added.

Earlier, the President General of the Irri community accused the company of hiding under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to justify its inaction.

“The PIA does not prevent OANDO from showing respect to our king or responding to our correspondences. If they continue to ignore us, we will be forced to shut down all oil activities in Irri,” he warned.

Irri Community Storms OANDO Flow Station in Protest Over Marginalization

By Kelvin Ohoror

Residents of Irri community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State have staged a protest at the OANDO Flow Station, decrying years of alleged marginalization and neglect by the oil company. The peaceful demonstration saw scores of youths and elders including women blocking access to the facility, demanding immediate attention to their grievances.

The demonstration, which began early on Monday, brought the town to a standstill, with major businesses and the oil firms halting operations.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards they carried read, “We Need Electricity”, “We Need Employment”, “Irri Need Gas Turbine”, “Our Skills Acquisition Centre/Hospital Are Dommant”, We Are Being Marginalised”, “We Need Our Fair Share”, “No single Project Since 2017”, “We Need PIA Project”, “We need Upgrade of Our Indigenes Working In OANDO”, “We Need Our Tennant Rate As Owners”, “We Need Indigeneous Contractors”, among others, calling for an end to what they describe as years of neglect by the by the Oil firm operating in the area.
The Isoko Nation Newspaper gathered that the protest was centred around the years of neglect and none fulfilment of the GMOU which was earlier signed by NOAC before it was bought over by OANDO and according to them, OANDO has never listened to their agitation despite series of moves made by the community for negotiations.

Speaking to newsmen during the protest, the President of Irri Development Union, Mr John Ozaveva Eweh said that, “NOAC now OANDO have been operating in our community for many years and the community has been left behind. We have written several letters, made series of requests, but to no avail. They are in our land working and exploiting our God- given resources without giving regard to our community were they operate.

“They are hiding under the PIA to deny the community what is due and expected from them. For example, the PIA did not tell them not to respect our Odio-Ologbo. The PIA did not tell them not to respond to letters. Our request are written on the various placards and if our demands are not met, we will shut down all oil exploration activities in their community.”
Also speaking, Odio Silas Efajemue, Odio in Council, who represented the Odiologbo of Irri, HRM Simon Wajutome Odhomo, Igbogidi I, said; “We need light, we have been crying for this light over the years that they have been operating here. The PIA act that was signed into law by the Federal Government, the company has failed to adhere to it. We need our sons and daughters to be employed in the company. Also we need the company to create Public Affairs Department here, we can’t be running to Kwale just to submit letters and our request for the Public Affairs Department unit there. We need ours here so that we can be having our meetings with the company here without running to Kwale whenever the need arises.
“Since OANDO took over this place, they have not paid a courtesy visit to His Majesty. So we don’t know who is operating here, whether its AGIP or OANDO. By right, as OANDO took over, they suppose to pay a courtesy visit to the Odiologbo Palace, but that they haven’t done. They have not followed what was written in the GMOU including the scholarship given 3 years ago. Since 2017, till date, they are still owing us what was written in the GMOU we signed years ago.”
In their separate interviews, the Odiologbo Palace Secretary, Hon Efewomazino Okiroro Otuaga and Prince Olomu Chris Ewomazino, Landlord Chairman of the Community, said, the protest was long overdue because the company operating in the area has neglected the community, stressing that; “It has been long that the company deviated from the GMOU which was signed since 2015 and the last project done by the company in the community was in 2017. And since then till date, nothing has been done. We have written several letters all to no avail. Hence we are protesting today.”
They vowed to shut down all oil exploration activities in the community if their demands were not met, noting that as host community to OANDO, an Oil Company operating in the area, they deserved better deal.

Nigeria Olympic Committee Eyes 2030 Commonwealth Games

Commonwealth Games

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) announced it has met the March 28, 2025 deadline for expression of interest to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Nigeria can only commence a formal bid with the backing of the country’s government.

Nigeria lost a bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow.

A statement released by NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya said that Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 Games in capital city Abuja will present a unique opportunity to showcase its development, enhance its global standing and invigorate its sports culture.

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event — the African Games — in 2003 in Abuja.

“That experience will provide a solid foundation for Nigeria to host again, showcasing its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required by such events,” the NOC statement read.

“This would also provide a compelling narrative for the nation’s progress and readiness.”

The next Commonwealths will again be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026.

Australian state Victoria had been scheduled to host the event, but the local government later pulled out due to spiraling costs.

ACOMIN Team Visits Warri South, Okpe LGAs Executive Secretaries, Draws Government’s Attention to Challenges in PHCs

By Emeka Nwokocha

ACOMIN, Delta State Advocacy Team, led by Mr. Austin Uwede, on Thursday 27, 2025, paid an advocacy visit to the Executive Secretaries of Warri South and Okpe local government councils as part of the team’s routine monitoring of the Global Fund sponsored free Malaria/Tuberculosis/HIV treatment in selected Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities in Delta State.

Speaking to Dr. M. Sagay, Executive Secretary (ES), Warri South Local Government Health Authority, Mr. Uwede briefed her about the Global Fund sponsored free Malaria/Tuberculosis/HIV treatment and the role ACOMIN plays in the implementation of the health intervention project.

He said, “The Global Fund sponsored Malaria/HIV/Tuberculosis treatment is ongoing in thirteen states of Nigeria, including 10 local government areas of Delta State.

“The implementation of the health intervention project is being facilitated by three nongovernmental organisations which provide different services to ensure the project runs seamlessly and achieves its objective.”

Uwede added, “The non governmental organisations include the Management Science for Health (MSH) which is in charge of commodity supply, the Society for Family Health (SFH) which focuses on demand creation, and ACOMIN whose role is centred on accountability and advocacy.”

He further stated, “In the course of our activities, we routinely visit the selected facilities where the free Malaria/Tuberculosis/HIV treatment is being provided and interact with the staff (medical personnel) to ensure the project runs without any hitches and people are able to access the free health service delivery.”

Uwede added, “We also go to the communities hosting the facilities and enlighten them about the ongoing project so they would access the free health service. We also urge them to take ownership of the facilities and support the ongoing health intervention project to ensure quality health service delivery.”

Uwede said that the ACOMIN team uses different methods, including Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to appraise the success of the project in various facilities, saying, “When we go to a community for the first time, we go to the facility, we rely on selective audience to get a feedback on the health services being provided to patients.

Our target audience is pregnant women, parents of under-five years children, and community leaders. We let them know what our roles are and also seek their cooperation.

We also sensitize the communities that the facility is not just a government property, that their support to the facilities would ensure quality health service delivery.”

He further stated, “When we go to the facilities and observe some gaps, we seek support from the communities and the government to address them.

He said, “In the course of our supervisory role and ensuring accountability in the delivery of health service to patients, we have completed our activities at Eboh and Igbudu PHCs and currently working at Ugbuwangue and Ifie PHCs.”

Continuing, Uwede noted some challenges in the healthcare facilities, saying, “The Ugbuwangue facility’s roof is leaking, there is no labour room, and there is a need for an oxygen tank.”

Uwede stated that his team had sought the assistance of the leaders of Ugbuwangue community to fix the leaking roof in the hope of a positive response.

He also stated that the septic tank in Ifie facility had collapsed, adding that the attention of the community had been drawn to the collapsed septic tank hoping that it would be fixed in no distant time.

Continuing, he noted that the medical personnel working in the facilities are grossly inadequate, adding that most of them are ad hoc staff.

He expressed the urgent need for the government to recruit more health personnel to address the drastic shortage of staff at the PHCs.

He commended the people of Ifie community for providing little support to the facility, such as provision of consumables including plasters, cotton wools, syringes.

He said, “While we are waiting for positive response from the communities, we are calling on the local government council, owner and manager of the facilities to address the challenges to ensure a conducive environment for the provision of quality health service delivery to the people.”

Responding, Dr. Sagay thanked the ACOMIN team for their observation and contribution to quality health service delivery at the PHCs.

She stated that the current chairman of Warri South local government council, Hon. Weyimi Agbateyiniro, upon resumption of office, asked her and the supervisor for health to do a tour of the healthcare facilities in Warri South LGA, note their challenges and present them to him.

She stated, “We had gone round and submitted our observation to the Chairman for action. I am sure in no distant time the challenges you have noted will be addressed.”

She added, “Meanwhile, I will deploy one staff to Ifie facility to make health service delivery less cumbersome.”

She further stated, “On the issue of shortage of manpower and use of ad hoc staff at the PHCs, it is the responsibility of the Delta State government to address the challenge.

In a similar vein, Mr. Austin Uwede and his team visited Orerokpe PHC and met with the RBM, Mrs. Victoria Aragbata and briefed her about the ongoing Global Fund sponsored free Malaria/HIV/ Tuberculosis in selected PHCs in Okpe local government area and the role of ACOMIN in ensuring the health intervention project runs successfully.

Uwede told her that ACOMIN Team had exited Osubi and Okuokoko PHCs, and currently working at Ughoton and Jeddo PHCs.

Uwede noted the challenges in the facilities to include flooding at Osubi PHC during rainy season, and the facility has no security man and gardener. He also noted that Okuokoko PHC is flooded during rainy season. He further noted that Ughoton facility is not fenced, no adequate chairs, no security man, and no gardener.

He added that Jeddo facility does not have electricity and adequate chairs, saying, “We had met with the community chairman to seek assistance, he promised that temporarily, he will provide chairs to the facility during antenatal and routine immunization days.”

“We are making further effort to ensure the facility has adequate chairs,” he stated.
Uwede expressed concern over the shortage of staff in all the facilities, noting that the development inhibits effective health service delivery to patients.

Responding, Mrs. Aragbata thanked ACOMIN team for their complementary role in ensuring quality health service delivery in the PHCs, stating that despite the inherent challenges, the staff of Orerokpe PHC are doing their best to deliver quality health service to patients.

She said that the challenges observed at the facilities would be noted and communicated to the relevant authorities for action.
