The Olomoro Community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, at the weekend placed a ban on the sales of illicit Drugs and illegal possession of firearms in the community and the adjoining villages in the area.
The ban which was announced by the President General of Olomoro Community, Chief Anthony Ukpagba, was in collaboration with the Security and the Vigilante Committee members, together with the executive members of the community, during a sensitisation tour of the three quarters and the surrounding villages in the area.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Ukpagba said, the decision to tackle the menace was taken at Olomoro September General Conference, as the sales and consumption of illicit drugs in the community has caused sicknesses and ailments to the youth of the community.
He maintained that some of the youths indulged in the substance abuse are now in the streets, as the drugs have taken over their brain and eventual loss of memory.
Speaking further, Ukpagba said, illegal possession of firearms was also banned, as some persons have legalized the use of arms and ammunition without recourse to the law binding its authorization, adding that the community has written to the local government chairman and the commissioner of police and also copied the Divisional Police Officer, the Army and other security agents.
According to the President, all the churches in Olomoro community received a letter and were urged to inform their congregations, noting that hotels were also sensitised to stop the sales and consumption of Illicit drugs in the community, warning that anyone cut will be handed over to the police.
Ukpagba maintained that Olomoro traditional council is part of the committees saddle with the announcement and implementation of the embargo.
He added that students and pupils found loitering during school hours will be picked by members of the implementation committee.
The President General emphasised that, only members of Olomoro vigilante group are certified to carry arms and ammunition through the permission of the Local Government Chairman and the Divisional Police officer.
The sensitisation tour that commenced from Olomoro civic centre, took the implementation committee round the three quarters and the villages in the area.
